<td valign="top" width="579">Seiring dengan berkembangnya implementasi sistem manajemen kinerja Balanced Scorecard, banyak orang yang salah kaprah dengan menyamakan Balanced Scorecard dengan Key Performance Indicator (KPI). Salah kaprah ini perlu diluruskan karena sehebat apapun KPI menurut persepsi Anda, tidak akan membawa organisasi pada target kinerja yang ingin dicapai.  KPI yang baik dan benar hanya bisa disusun dengan sepenuhnya menggunakan <em>tool</em> Balanced Scorecard. Kalau tidak demikian, KPI hanyalah hasil penajaman <em>job description</em>, <em>job objective</em> atau <em>key result area </em>(KRA). Sehingga akhirnya, KPI tidak bermakna apa-apa bagi implementasi strategi organisasi karena terjebak pada KPI rutin/generik.KPI adalah indikator keberhasilan dari sebuah organisasi/unit kerja/pejabat pimpinan dan individu yang ada dalam perusahaan. KPI bukan jembatan penghubung <em>job description</em> atau <em>job objective</em> jabatan dengan target kinerja, seperti yang disampaikan sejumlah trainer/konsultan. KPI adalah kinerja itu sendiri, dan target KPI adalah target kinerja itu sendiri.</p>
<p>Tentukan dulu <em>strategic objective </em>organisasi dan unit kerja di mana Anda bekerja, baru Anda bisa menyusun KPI yang baik. Semakin tinggi hirarki jabatan dalam organisasi, maka KPI semakin bersifat strategis. Semakin rendah hirarki jabatan, KPI semakin bersifat teknis. Lantas, bagaimana menyusun <em>strategic objective</em> dan KPI yang benar dan <em>powerful</em>? Apa saja syarat-syarat dari sebuah KPI yang benar? Bagaimana metodologi pengukuran KPI? Bagaimana menyusun kegiatan/proyek yang tepat untuk mewujudkan target KPI?</p>
