<td valign="top" width="579">Distributed Control Systems (DCS) made its first entry in the 70’s. Cheap microprocessors made the possibility to distribute control systems across the entire plant. Each controller control a limited part of the plant and each controller communicate to each other using a proprietary communication protocol. This is of course making the system becomes more configurable. DCS uses pre-programmed modules which are available to execute simple and more complex process control tasks. During the years that followed, DCS systems were used throughout the most diverse process industries in both continuous and batch applications. DCS applications in these different control environments made them increasingly mature, hundreds of configurable modules for every possible control problem were developed and stored in the system library. Using DCS, process controllers were able to handle tens, hundreds even thousand of control loops without jeopardizing the reliability of the complete control systems.</p>

<p>Kepedulian pada pemeliharaan dan peningkatan kualitas lingkungan dan perlindungan terhadap kesehatan manusia, telah menyebabkan organisasi atau perusahaan lebih memperhatikan potensi dampak lingkungan yang ada akibat aktivitas, produk dan jasa yang mereka miliki. Kinerja perusahaan dalam bidang lingkungan menjadi sesuatu yang sangat penting bagi pihak internal dan eksternal yang berkepentingan terhadap perusahaan. Untuk mencapai kinerja yang baik dalam bidang lingkungan diperlukan sebuah komitmen organisasi terhadap pendekatan yang sistimatik dan perbaikan yang terus menerus terhadap sistem manajemen lingkungan yang dimilikinya. Badan dunia untuk standarisasi, ISO pada tahun 1996 telah mengeluarkan standar mengenai sistem manajemen lingkungan (SML) yang dikenal dengan ISO seri 14000 (Environmental Management System/EMS). Sistem manajemen lingkungan ini memberikan urutan dan konsistensi bagi perusahaan untuk menangani permasalahan lingkungan melalui pengalokasian sumberdaya, penunjukkan tanggung jawab dan evaluasi yang terus menerus terhadap prosedur, proses dan pelaksanaannya. Pengelolaan lingkungan adalah bagian terpadu dari keseluruhan sistem manajemen perusahaan. Struktur, tanggung jawab, praktek, prosedur, proses dan sumberdaya untuk melaksanakan kebijakan lingkungan, objektif, dan target dapat dikoordinasikan dengan usaha-usaha yang ada yang berlangsung pada area yang lain seperti operasi produksi, keuangan, mutu, kesehatan dan keselamatan kerja.<br />
Akhir-akhir ini kita melihat banyak perusahaan telah mendapatkan sertifikasi ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001 dan SMK3. Ini merupakan fenomena yang baik dimana banyak perusahaan sudah memiliki komitmen untuk peningkatan kinerja dibidang lingkungan hidup dan K3 dengan pendekatan sistem dan proses yang terstruktur. Hanya saja sangat disayangkan kalau dalam proses mendapatkan sertifikasi tersebut perusahaan mengembangkan sistem manajemennya dengan cara yang terpisah-pisah antara sistem manajemen K3 dan lingkungan hidup sehingga terjadi proses dan prosedur yang saling tumpang tindih yang berdampak pada penggunaan sumberdaya yang tidak efisien dan tidak efektif.</p>
